Ethan was running along Staten Island's South Beach, and it was early in the morning, the crisp December air was stopping people from enjoying the glorious sunrise. Only a few people dared to take a walk along the FDR Boardwalk this early, but Ethan didn't mind. He preferred warm air, but he was an athlete, so seeing that swimming would be near suicide at this time of the year, running was the only bearable option. He wore a long-sleeved Under Armor shirt, Adidas soccer pants, thick socks and his tennis shoes, and he was still chilly. Of course, the air was piercing his lungs every time he took a breath, but that hardly mattered. His toned body rejoiced every time he ran, making the run worth it.
Ethan began contemplating life after college while running this particular morning. He still had no idea what he wanted to do with his science degrees. Of course, he could continue studying and become a professional in his area of study, or become a teacher, but neither of those things appealed to him. Well, teaching did to a certain extent. But his greatest desire was to play soccer professionally, and with this, he knew that it would be tough. He was just barely good enough to play for the American soccer league, let alone any European league; and he wasn't nearly as good as he should be, considering who his father was. He was continuously contemplating his future, and only beautiful mornings like the one he was living could ever remind Ethan to live in the present.

on any normal day, brynne would not be out and about this early, let alone be anywhere near staten island. today she needed a break from manhattan. she needed a break from her house, a break from everything. she had spent most of the past twenty-four hours locked in her room. she was still kind of in denial about what all had just happened. she had not cried, she had not really let any emotions come out. to be honest, she had just laid in her room staring at the walls. she had broken off her engagement with the only man she ever loved. she had broken off the most perfect relationship a person could ask for. she had let all her doubts be provoked by the stupid gossip blog. she had let all her worries bottle up until she couldn't take it anymore. it killed her to end things, but she figured it was for the best. she had always had trust issues, and well she just wasn't ready. all of this was why brynne had gotten up early. she couldn't sleep. her mind would not rest and the baby wouldn't stop kicking either. after rolling around trying to sleep, she decided it best to get up and leave the house.
since manhattan had nothing but things that reminded her of harry, she headed out to staten island. it was nice to get away from the city and take a walk on the boardwalk, even if it was rather cold out. she wandered down the boardwalk letting her gaze wander along the horizon, giving her something to look at while she lost herself in deep thought. her arms were crossed, hugging her warmth tightly to herself. she sighed lightly as she continued down the boardwalk. her eyes closed for just a few seconds. when they opened again a runner was headed right in her direction. she quickly moved out of the way to avoid a collision with the man. "sorry!" she said quickly apologizing for getting in the way. bee really should have been paying more attention to her surroundings. the fact that her thoughts had nearly caused a collision only frustrated her more.
notes , sorry this is a tad rambley katters.

Ethan couldn't have asked for a clearer sky. As the sun rose, bringing the temperature up a little with it, he noticed that there wasn't a cloud to be seen, which probably contributed to the cold weather. He could barely feel his toes, but his legs were still working quite well, so he kept running. After a little while, Ethan could see a person in the distance. From the shape of the person, he guessed it was a woman. She was walking, not jogging, and she seemed to be colder for it. As he grew closer to her, he could see that the person was a student, like himself. Her name was Brynne Golightly, a student about his age, and her long blond hair was what gave her away from such a distance. Ethan knew her because all of his friends wanted her and pointed her out every time she was in the area. She was pretty; probably the most attractive woman he had seen since he had been in America. She was tall and slim, which seemed to have been the popular look for quite a while now. He personally had never liked a woman to be his height, but that was, it seemed, just him. Miss Golightly also had a good-natured face and a friendly smile that kept no one wondering why she was so popular. He had never actually spoken to her, which never bothered him like it did his mates. He had never understood the hype that surrounded her, and by the looks of it, she didn't either. All of his friends tried to be her friend on line, which he thought to be incredibly humorous, especially when she ignored their requests.
The closer they grew to each other, the easier it was to notice that she was distracted and troubled, which, he thought, might have something to do with the fact that she was very pregnant. Of course, this news was old news, and had been quite a let down for his friends, who knew that the poor woman had been in love and was not the least bit interested in another man in her life, especially if the meeting was brief. Ethan noticed that she was so distracted that she closed her eyes and sidestepped at the most inopportune moment, causing him to have to jump out of the way to avoid a collision. Ethan did not want to collide with a pregnant woman, which was why he slowed down at the best time, extended his hands at the best time, and moved aside at the best time. He stopped running, internally thankful for a reason to stop his run, and saw that she was frustrated with herself for closing her eyes and almost injuring herself. Not to worry. Are you alright? he said, quite aware that his accent still hadn't turned American enough to blend in. He had just gotten back from Paris, though, which didn't help.

it was one of those days when she wished she could just clear her mind. she wished she could just let all of her thoughts go. bee hadn't had any breakdowns yet, which surprised even herself. she had gotten away with not wallowing, and it was kind of great in her opinion, but at the same time she didn't know how to let out all the crap that had built up in her head. she had almost lost herself in her thoughts again, but caught herself when she realized the runner had stopped to ask if she was alright. not to worry. are you alright? that had to be a trick question. she was physically alright, and she knew that is what he meant, or at least she thought that's what he meant, but her mind was telling her other wise. alright? no. she wasn't alright, but she wasn't going to really admit that now was she? even to her closest friends the words "i'm fine" had slipped from her mouth a zillion times. "yeah.... i'm fine." she said a little distantly.
she finally let her eyes meet his, realizing she had seen him around before. "you um.. go to nyu right?" she asked after a moment, hoping conversation could distract her from the thoughts that were boiling in her head. she was nearly positive she had seen this guy around campus. he was friends with those two weird guys who were always hitting on her. sure she found it a bit flattering but when she started getting online friend requests from them it became a little creepy. this one however, she had heard from a few of her friends that he was new to new york. from paris maybe? she couldn't really remember. all she knew was that a few of her friends were always swooning over him. sure he was attractive, but he wasn't really her type.

Ethan watched as her features turned from frustrated to slightly worried. She wasn't alright, that much was obvious. Anybody with eyes could see that. But if she was physically safe, then he should really get back to running. He hesitated, though, because he wanted to help her. He knew he couldn't, really, but he felt obligated to try. Then, before he could say anything of consequence, she asked him if he went to NYU. This surprised him, because he hadn't expected her to know him, by face or name. But she did, for some reason. Yes, actually. I'm a senior too.
He shrugged. Maybe she came to the soccer games, he didn't know. Then it occured to him that maybe, just maybe, his friends had something to do with this. Were they so bad that she had come to know him by association? He grimaced. I think you, erm... I think know of a few friends of mine? he asked, a little awkwardly. He figured that his friends had gone too far a few times when wasted, but Ethan wasn't responsible for that, nor was he going to undertake the consequences. Sorry about them. They're quite taken by you, if you didn't notice. Ethan nodded slightly to himself. Light and a bit joking always helped, he thought.
notes: Tisse I am SO sorry. This is terrible. :////

brynne forced a smile to her face as he spoke. she didn't want to seem rude or anything. yes, actually. I'm a senior too. bee was a little surprised by that. he seemed a little young to be a senior. she herself was only a junior, and she thought she was a little older than him. she wasn't quite sure though. she hadn't really been around campus lately. after the semester had ended she had decided she wasn't coming back to finish the year. time off was what she needed, college was never really her thing anyways. I think you, erm... I think know of a few friends of mine? bee chuckled lightly at that. it was the first time even a little bit of laughter had come from her in the past twenty-four hours. Sorry about them. They're quite taken by you, if you didn't notice. "yeah, i started noticing after the sixth friend request on facebook.."she said. she found it all to be rather amusing to be honest. they were always trying so hard to get her attention. she felt a little bad for turning them down, but number one, they weren't her type, and number two, she had enough guys in her life.
she looked over him once again before realizing where else she had seen him. "you play soccer don't you..?" she asked. she was avoiding at all costs talking about herself. she didn't want to talk about her. she wanted to get her mind of her problems, and on someone else's problems. she desperately wanted to get her stupid thoughts out of her head. she was fairly sure that this guy was a soccer player, her harry and ryan had been to quite a few of the soccer games. it was the only sport bee was actually interested in. she was rather good at it too, back when she played herself. her smile faded as her mind lingered on the topic of harry. she and harry had always played soccer together as kids. she shook the thoughts off and looked back at the guy. "oh, wow i'm sorry. i totally forgot to introduce myself.. i'm brynne golightly."she said. he may have known who she was, but she wanted to introduce herself nonetheless. it was rude not to. besides, as familiar as he seemed, she could not for the life of her think of his name. her thoughts were too scrambled as it was, not to mention she was horrible with names.

A smile crossed his face when she laughed, because it brightened her eyes just a smidgen, which made him feel better. He liked helping people. Isn't that a quality of a teacher? he thought distantly. Shrugging off his thought, he noticed that Brynne was talking. Six? I thought being denied once would've done the trick. I need to have a chat with them, don't I? He smiled at her, hoping to provoke a smile in responce. If only he were that lucky. He knew that his friends could be jerks, pricks, and idiots, but he didn't think of them as stalkers until just then. He did need to talk to them. What if they began following her? He wouldn't stand for that. Ethan had always been oddly protective of women and children, and he didn't really recognize it until he began thinking about it, all in those few short moments. No friends of his would stalk a woman, that he knew.
He was again surprised that she knew so much about him. He must have been right; she did watch the soccer matches. I've played since freshmen year. Scholarship, you know, he said dismissively. He had never needed the scholarship, but since it was offered, and since he wanted to see New York, he accepted the invitation. NYU was generous and paid for everything he needed, though his parents could have done the same thing just as easily. He felt proud of himself. He was the son of a wealthy couple, and yet he was completely dependant on only himself. A certain amount of pride had to be accounted for. Oh right, he said to her introducing herself. It was unnecessary, of course, seeing as he knew full well who she was, but it was polite. He hoped, for a moment, that she wouldn't recognize his surname. Only soccer fans in Europe recognized it easily; Americans tended to be more ignorant. Only truly dedicated soccer fans in America had been able to make the connection between Ethan and his father. I'm Ethan Parche. It's nice to meet you, he said, shaking her petite hand and politely smiling at her.

six? i thought being denied once would've done the trick. i need to have a chat with them, don't i? bee's face had lightened a little. this guy was doing a good job of distracting her from her thoughts. "i guess i'm just that irresistible." she joked. she was surprised a joke actually fell from her mouth. this guy seemed so very nice. he seemed like a very helpful fellow. she was feeling a little better about things now that she was in conversation with him. well, she may not have felt better, maybe more along the lines of she was ignoring everything which in turn did make her feel a bit better.
her face grew more serious as he spoke of soccer. i've played since freshmen year. scholarship, you know. so he was the player she had seen a few times. "oh, that's great. i've seen you in a few of the matches. my fian-"she cut herself off, her face saddening lightly, before faking a smile. "my ex and i, we've attended quite a few matches." she said. she forced herself to think about something else. "so you're on scholarship? that's really cool.." she said lamely, just to get her mind off of things. she meant what she said though. it was cool that he got a scholarship. bee on the other hand had barely gotten into the school. she was nearly positive that the only reason she got in was because her mother had made a few phone calls. college wasn't her thing really, and luckily she wasn't going to have to worry about it. she was taking the semester off, probably longer. it didn't matter anyways. bee was majoring in musical theatre. in her opinion you either had the talent or you didn't, no classes would change that. broadway was what she wanted, but she hadn't auditioned in her current state. there would be no point. maybe in a few years though.
she glanced up as he introduced himself. i'm ethan parche. it's nice to meet you. bee smiled lightly and shook his hand. "nice to meet you ethan.."she said trailing off as her mind was thinking about his name. parche sounded so very familiar. then it hit her. "parche.. you're related to the soccer player aren't you?" she asked. bee was a fan of european soccer. after all she had spent two years in london, and one of her ex-step-fathers practically owned one of the soccer teams over there.
[this is shit. XD sorry.]

He laughed as she spoke of herself as irresistable, trying to make the conversation lighter. That and they're just prats, he said honestly. He listened as she told him that she and her fiance had been to many of the matches. Ethan had been told that she was engaged a while back, and the fact that she corrected herself and used the word 'ex' explained everything. Well, almost. It explained her state, both physically and emotionally. She was hiding distress, though very well. Again, she hit him with another surprise. She knew of his father, though vaguely. He was beginning to think that she knew just about everything when he realized that she was still trying to fake him out, make him think that there was nothing he could do to make her feel better.
The longer he contemplated it, the longer he realized that she was a lost cause, at least for him. He didn't know her well at all, and the fact that she was as distracted as she was meant that their conversation wouldn't last long. He thought momentarily of saying goodbye and returning to his run, and as he did so, the bitter wind picked up and made his mind turn to different matters. Is it smart to be out in the cold like this so late in your term? he asked, not sure whether the question was inappropriate. It didn't really matter. What were the chances of them running into one another again? Slim to none. With that, Ethan took his chances and decided to be polite. He instincts told him to take the pregnant woman inside and make her some tea. Would you like to go get some tea? he asked, before she could respond to his first question. It might have seemed rude to ask her so bluntly, but he wasn't interested in dating her, and wasn't attracted to her, so he felt no guilt in getting her something warm to drink. Maybe she didn't drink tea. Or coffee? he added quickly.
notes: I had to do something. This thread wasn't going anywere fast. XD

brynne nodded in a sort-of "oh yeah, that's also true" way as he spoke of his friends being prats. she did sometimes find them to be a bit annoying, but she found also found them to entertaining, and the fact that they were oh so interested was rather flattering. as bee spoke of his father, she guessed she was right as he didn't really say anything. her attempts at keeping of the conversation away from herself wasn't working as well as she had hoped. the whole hiding distress thing was much harder than she thought. she'd been perfecting her whole "i'm fine" thing a lot lately, though most people wouldn't believe that. a short silence fell between them. bee was at a lost for words and her mind kept drifting. is it smart to be out in the cold like this so late in your term? she glanced over to him at this comment. she knew very well she shouldn't really be out at all, let alone in this cold. due to her most recent stress breakdown, it was advised that she not do anything strenuous, even if it was just lots of walking. she obviously hadn't taken the advice as here she was standing out in the cold. "um.. probably not smart."she said. she knew it wasn't smart, but she needed out of the house.
she was a tad bit surprised by his offer. would you like to go get some tea? to be honest bee hated tea, but she wasn't going to turn down his offer. she should probably get out of the cold, and besides he was being very polite. she smiled lightly when he quickly added the coffee part. bee may have hated tea, but she was a complete coffee addict. it was hard for her adjusting to the whole decaf thing, but hey it was better than not having coffee at all. "yeah, uh, coffee sounds great." she said, hoping he would lead the way. bee didn't really come to staten island that often and she wasn't too aware of the cafes that were around.
